Around half of all young people worldwide have some level of fear of needles. This has the potential to make it difficult for them to have routine medical care including blood tests, vaccines, simple dental care, and certain medicines. It can be difficult for young people to access help to manage their needle fear, especially at a time when NHS services are under high pressure and increased demand. Fiona Sotir, a PhD researcher, and Paediatric Dentist at the University of Sheffield created the No Need(le) To Worry study to help these young people manage their fear of needles at home. Working alongside young people, parents, and healthcare professionals, a self-help webpage has been developed to help support young people with some of the most common needle-based procedures.
