About
Perinatal care, defined as pregnancy and the newborn period, is the cornerstone to a successful start in life.
Healthcare technologies are playing an increasingly critical role in the delivery of high-quality perinatal care. However, innovative technologies in this area are scarce.
There is an urgent need to bring new, innovative technological solutions to support care during pregnancy and the newborn period.
PeriTech has been established to address this gap.
PeriTech aims to encourage collaboration between key stakeholders and support the development and adoption of new, innovative technologies for perinatal care.
PeriTech is co-ordinated by Professor Don Sharkey and Professor Kate Walker, who lead the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Paediatrics and Child Health’s Early Life theme.
What We Can Do Together
PeriTech aims to build a world-class virtual hub where we bring together all stakeholders in the field of perinatal technologies. This includes parents/carers, healthcare professionals, industry, policymakers, regulators, linked medical and surgical specialties, funders, and investors.
To take blue-sky ideas from concept, to early prototype, clinical trials, commercialisation and ultimately deliver patient impact and benefit, requires a collaborative network.
This is where PeriTech can help. PeriTech has the expertise, connections, and know how to get innovative ideas off the ground.
PeriTech works closely with the European Society for Paediatric Research and their special interest group for AI & Technologies.
Priority Areas
PREGNANCY CARE
PeriTech aims to support all healthcare technologies at every stage of pregnancy.
There are many unmet needs in pregnancy care that we believe could be addressed by current and future technologies.
Particular areas of focus include tracking fetal wellbeing, predicting preterm birth, and monitoring the fetus around birth.
NEWBORN CARE
PeriTech aims to to support all newborns, but has a specific focus on high-risk infants.
Newborn care has advanced significantly in recent years, thanks in part to new technologies.
However, technology development for newborn care remains underfunded and has lacked rigorous research, resulting in limited benefits to infants.
Join the PeriTech Network
A crucial role of PeriTech is to connect people anywhere along the technology development journey to maximise the potential for new ideas to be adopted into clinical care.
PeriTech has strong links with many key stakeholders, including clinical experts, funders and investors, regulatory experts, health economists, parent and child groups, and industry partners.
We aim to keep a database of all stakeholders in the field of perinatal technologies to host networking events, support funding applications, ensure PPIE at all stages of technology development, and offer signposting where needed.
