Delivering NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Biomedical Research Centre PhD Workshops

Friday 19 July 2024

The NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health is an organisation dedicated to transforming the healthcare of young people living with a long-term health condition, and their families.

Our organisation works across sectors to support the development of medical technology that improves the quality of life and daily healthcare management of these families. One of the major strengths of our team is the importance we place on including young people and families at every stage of healthcare innovation in a meaningful way.

Our team are collaborating with the NIHR Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to deliver four PhDs focused on developing novel technologies for paediatrics and child health.

In April 2024, the NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health invited healthcare professionals, young people, and their families to in-person workshops. These workshops aimed to gather the information required to ensure the PhDs address the needs and requirements of those that they are aiming to support.

The two workshops, in Sheffield and London, consisted of interactive activities and discussions facilitated by the NIHR HRC team. Each activity aimed to gather the thoughts and ideas of families and healthcare professionals about each PhD project and the best way to address the barriers to accessible health management.

At the end of the workshop, we asked participants to share their thoughts and reflections so we could evaluate our approach to patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) going forward:

What was the most valuable part of the day for you?

“Discussing the topics with children and young people! Their experiences, issues, involvement.”

“Discussion with patients and carers, sharing ideas with them.”

“Chance to give 1st hand experience.”

Would you recommend sessions like these to other families, carers, healthcare professionals or researchers? Can you tell us why, or why not?

“Yes. To give other healthcare professionals ownership over a changing world.”

“Yes. So important to hear perspectives of patient/carers. I learned a lot.”

“Yes! Really great opportunity.”

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

“Really enjoyed the workshop, thank you.”
